Artistic Directors August Viverito and T L Kolman present a thrilling new incarnation of Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part I at The Lex Theatre in Hollywood. Deploying a theatrical barrage of combat, live music, pageantry and soaring language, the Production Company presents a glorious and rambunctious revival of the youthful Shakespeare’s most violent, passionate, majestic and politically charged play. Directed by Christopher William Johnson, with fight choreography by Jen Albert, and choral direction by Daniel Halden, it features an acting ensemble made up of Eva Bloomfield, Tiffany Cole, Christopher Carver, Allen Darby, Alex Elliott-Funk, Synden Healy, Kyle Hester, Charles M. Howell IV, Eric Rollins, Taylor Jackson Ross, Tina Van Berckelaer, Matt Van Curen, JB Waterman, and Johnny Patrick Yoder. Assistant direction is by Scott Fleming, lighting by Johnny Patrick Yoder, sound and percussion design by Ryan Beveridge, and costumes are by Will Brattain.
When England’s heroic Henry V dies unexpectedly in his prime, the inexperienced boy-King Henry VI ascends the throne with catastrophic results. Rallying under the banner of the sorceress Joan of Arc, the French quickly rise in rebellion to reclaim their lands conquered by the late Henry V. As England’s conquests are wrenched violently away and their military might decimated, Henry VI’s court degenerates into rancorous infighting. And when a quarrel between the arrogant Duke of Somerset and the ambitious Duke of York results in the English nobility donning red and white roses to declare their partisan loyalties, the groundwork has been laid for the outbreak of the bloody and treasonous Wars of the Roses.

I actually found out about this play from a friend. Apparently it’s really good. There’s only been two performances, but there’s already lots of buzz going on about it. I plan on seeing it this coming Friday. My friend told me it was one of the best plays she’s seen in a long time. She said the fight scenes were “phenomenal” and “the acting was superb.” Her words exactly. I’ll admit I’m quite excited to see it on Friday!

Saw this play opening night and it was fabulous. It is remarkable what the directors have done with the staging and fight choreography. The actors succeed in differentiating their characters and in conveying a wide range of emotions. No easy task given the language and (for some) the accents. The action and tension keep the lengthy play moving along. There are also some real laugh out loud moments, which present a wonderful contrast to the tense fighting and death scenes. Highly recommend this play!

I am looking forward to this play too, Shakes2011! I am a big Shakespeare fan and have read Henry VI, part 1, 2, and 3. So I’m curious to see it for the first time on the stage!
