Theatricum Botanicum’s Academy of the Classics Has Something for Everyone

Our Shakespeare training series continues with a look at what’s happening out at Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon. The company offers a complete schedule of classes throughout the year for adults, teens, and children. Here are a few of the sessions you can participate in this spring.

Theatricum classes


MASTER THE AUDITION

Saturday, March 2nd
10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Limited enrollment to work
Class Fee: $50 to work, $35 to audit

Bring in a classical audition monologue to be critiqued and receive valuable feedback. Theatricum’s award-winning directors moderate the class to polish your material and help you get the job. SHAKESPEARE SCENE STUDY

April 6 – May 25
Saturdays, 10:00 am -1:00 pm in Hollywood
Class Fee: $400
Seasoned professionals and dedicated beginners will broaden their awareness of text, rhetoric and the Elizabethan world as it is applied to the physical, vocal and emotional realization of Shakespeare’s characters. These eight-week classes, taught by working professionals, focus on the performance of scenes and “job-getting” monologues. Participation is by interview only.

HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA SERIES

March 2 – May 11 (no class March 30)
Saturdays, 2:00 – 5:00 pm
Class Fee: $350

Creativity and personal expression are the foundations of this popular 10-session workshop. Students explore important issues affecting their lives and community through various acting, improvisation and writing exercises. As an ensemble, teens write a one-act play that is performed during the last class. They will also perform an encore staged reading of the play as part of Theatricum’s Seedlings New Play Development in late spring (date tba).

YOUTH CLASSES
Playwriting & Performing
March 2 – May 11 (no class March 30)
Saturdays, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
For 4th – 8th grade students
Class Fee: $350

Using improvisation and theatre games, students create an original play in this 10-week session. Everyone contributes ideas and participates in the writing process. Each student also receives individual coaching on a Shakespeare monologue or scene, specially chosen for them by the teacher. Both the play and Shakespeare are performed on the last day of class. Ability for sustained concentration is required. Fee includes class photo and a copy of their original play.

PRIVATE COACHING
