This is your opportunity to study with the company that brings Free Shakespeare to Griffith Park every summer as Independent Shakespeare Co. gets ready for Performance Classes in their Atwater Village Studio. Classes are available in Lyrical Verse Speaking, Shakespeare Scene Study, and Creative Movement. Check out the descriptions below and get started now.

LYRICAL VERSE SPEAKING

Taught by ISC co-founder, David Melville, this 3-hour master class will introduce you to the fundamentals of ISC’s approach to acting Shakespeare. Through a detailed examination of several of Shakespearean speeches, you will learn the basics of verse speaking, and skills to act Shakespeare with clarity and power. It is recommended that you take this class before enrolling in Shakespeare Scene Study. If you do, you will receive a discount for any subsequent enrollment in Scene Study Class.

SHAKESPEARE SCENE STUDY
Eight week class begins Monday, February 11
6:30 – 9:30 pm
Cost: $400, payable in two installments
(eastcheap members, 30% off)

Taught by ISC artistic director, Melissa Chalsma, this ongoing class is a Shakespeare laboratory. We all want to make choices that are dynamic, informed, and entertaining, and this class is designed to help you do just that. Based in thorough text analysis and the fundamentals of verse speaking, the exercises will help you develop your own personal technique to connect to Shakespeare’s work. The course culminates in a public performance of student work. It is recommended that you take the Lyrical Verse Speaking master class before enrolling in Shakespeare Scene Study. If you do, you will receive a discount for enrollment in Scene Study Class.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT
Eight week class begins Tuesday, February 12
6:30 – 9:30 pm
Cost: $400, payable in two installments
(eastcheap members, 30% off)

Taught by ISC Artistic Director, Melissa Chalsma this eight-week class is an intensive and fun introduction to movement for performance. It focuses on the development of individual creativity through physical expression. Participants will work on the movement fundamentals of basic anatomy, stretching and strengthening exercises, and somatic practices that develop the connection between breath and movement. You will learn the Laban effort actions technique as well as explore Viewpoints concepts and practices. All of the work will help you expand your sense of your physical freedom and allow you to make more creative physical choices. This is NOT a dance class and is open to all physical skill levels.
